Change your existing power supply
Change your existing power supply
If your electricity needs have changed, you may need to upgrade or modify your existing power supply. You can apply for works with help from your electrician.
Common reasons to modify your supply include:
- renovations, new appliances or changes to how much electricity you use
- reduce capacity if your electricity use has decreased
- install equipment such as EV chargers, larger air-conditioning systems or machinery
- upgrades needed to support growing electricity use in your area
For changes related to the installation of solar panels or batteries, visit Rooftop solar page.
Upgrade or alter an existing electricity supply
You may need to upgrade or alter your electricity supply if your energy needs change. Common changes to the existing electricity supply might include:
- Changing a residential or small business connection
- Increasing or decreasing how much electricity your property can use
- Changing your supply setup (such as single or three-phase power)
- Installing or removing controlled load (for things like hot water systems)
- Upgrading or changing meters or meter panels, including group metering
- Changes to CT (current transformer) metering for larger connections
- Relocating an overhead supply to an underground connection (where available at the same pole)
How to apply
Alteration applications can only be submitted by a qualified registered electrical contractor (REC). All works require a Certificate of Electrical Safety.
You can submit your application through our online portal, eConnect.
Once registered and logged in,
- Select Submit Connection Request
- Select Alteration Request
- Complete and submit the form
Costs and timeframes
Costs depend on the scope of work required, and whether it is completed during or outside business hours or the number of times we need to visit the site. Prices typically range from $600 to $4,500. An indicative cost for the requested works will be provided when the application is submitted through eConnect.
All works are completed by appointment, which is arranged by your electrician. Most works take between 3 – 8 weeks to complete, depending on their complexity. However, timelines may vary as the process relies on third parties to provide required information. It may take longer due to missed appointments, unsuccessful field visits or delays with retailer service orders.
We recommend applying early to allow time to assess and complete the works.
Upgrade or modify network assets
Some changes to your electricity supply may require upgrades to the electricity network. This happens when the existing network can’t support the changes you’ve requested.
You can apply for:
- Increases to supply capacity
- Installation of a pit for underground services
- Changing overhead electricity to underground services
- Subdivision of properties
- Large low voltage (LV) connections
- Dedicated on-site substations
- High-capacity electric vehicle charging installations
If your requested supply requires network upgrades, you’ll need to follow the network upgrade process. For more information on network upgrades including how to apply, costs and timeframes, visit the Arrange a new electricity supply page.
For more information on pits, visit the Pit installations page.
