Artwork unveiled for Maldon battery as work begins

Maldon residents have chosen the artwork that will wrap the town’s new community battery, with electricity distributor Powercor having begun battery installation.

The winning design, Harmony Journey, created by Dja Dja Wurrung artist Daikota Nelson, reflects the deep cultural and environmental connections of Maldon and Dja Dja Wurrung Country.

Powercor worked closely with Mount Alexander Shire Council to ensure the design meets local heritage guidelines.

The battery will be installed on Adair Street, opposite the Maldon Hospital. Once operating in late 2025, it will store excess rooftop solar and supply up to 50 nearby properties during peak demand periods.

Powercor’s Stakeholder Engagement Specialist Bex Bailey said the engagement with the community had been overwhelmingly positive.

"We had a fantastic response to the artwork voting, with 152 people casting their vote at the market and almost 300 votes overall including online submissions,” Bex said.

“That level of interest shows how much locals wanted to help shape the design. We also raised $530 for the Muckleford Cricket Club at the market, which made the day feel even more connected and positive."

The project is jointly funded by Powercor and the Australian Government's Community Batteries for Household Solar Program.

Powercor will begin installing the batter from 8 December, with the battery expected to be operating by the end of 2025.
