We work hard to keep our network safe and connected. This sometimes means that we need to turn your power off to do maintenance and repairs. Extreme weather and other incidents can also cause unplanned power outages.

Emergency advice
Extreme storms, floods, fires and high heat can damage the electricity network and affect power supplies. To reduce the inconvenience of a power outage, there are ways you can way to prepare and respond.

Outage notifications
When you sign up with an electricity retailer, they provide us the account holders’ contact details. We use this information to contact you with important updates about your electricity supply, including planned and unplanned outages, and other service changes that may impact you.

Life support services
Life support customers receive special consideration when we plan power outages or notify customers of unexpected outages due to emergencies.

Load shedding
Load shedding is when power is turned off to some customers because there is not enough electricity being generated to meet demand.

Outage tips
We know any outage is disruptive. If we’ve notified you that a power outage is planned, then rest assured this work is really important. We’ve put together some tips we hope will be useful in making outages less disruptive.

Minimum system load events
Rooftop solar in Victoria can sometimes generate more power than the grid can handle, particularly on mild, sunny days with low electricity demand. If unmanaged, this "minimum system load event" can destabilise the grid and cause widespread outages.
