Non-network opportunities

We regularly test traditional investments in poles, wires and transformers alongside third-party solutions.

This helps to maintain a reliable and affordable electricity supply to our customers.

Non-network solutions can include a wide range of initiatives, including:

  • demand management programs
  • flexible services, such as grid-connected battery storage
  • neighbourhood batteries
  • smart electric vehicle charging
  • behind the meter storage solutions.

Third parties can propose solutions that defer, reduce, or remove the need for investment in the network. This helps to keep costs low for our customers.

Online flexibility marketplace

Network data is critical to the development of non-network solutions. We’ve partnered with UK-based Piclo to develop our flexibility marketplace. Launched in 2024, it is helping to improve visibility of network constraints.

Using it is simple. Just register your asset, wait for new competitions to be released in your area and submit your bid.

What is flexibility?

Distributed energy resources can provide network services and boost energy flexibility.

This helps reduce pressure on the network. Flexibility can be achieved by supplying extra generation during summer peak periods. It can also shift large loads such as electric vehicles, to the middle of the day when solar energy is abundant.

We pay flexibility service providers to help manage the network when needed. This requires close engagement with suppliers to ensure a reliable service for customers.

Flexibility services are technology-agnostic. They may involve boosting consumption or reducing generation when renewable energy is abundant. Conversely, they can also reduce consumption or increase generation when demand is high.

Demand Side Engagement Framework

Our Demand Side Engagement Framework is available here. It helps non-network providers understand our processes to assessing demand side options. The framework also outlines our consultation process.
