Program overview

Earn whilst you learn and enjoy a nine-day fortnight working in an inclusive, friendly team. You’ll be working in the great outdoors and in different locations every day.

This year applications will be open 13 – 26 July.

Our apprenticeship program has been running for more than 20 years. Unlike many companies in the electricity distribution industry, we employ our apprentices directly and we’re extremely proud that more than 98% of the apprentices we recruit complete their four-year apprenticeship program and go on to enjoy successful careers in our business.

With the transformation to a modern grid, our team members are also involved in commissioning new smart energy and automation technology to integrate distributed energy sources.

To apply, you must be completing (or have completed) one of the following:

  • Year 11 and achieved a pass in General Maths units 1 & 2; or
  • Certificate II in Electrotechnology (Pre-Apprenticeship) TAFE course

We look for applicants that enjoy problem-solving and have an interest in practical and technical activities. Most importantly, we want team players who enjoy learning, are passionate about supporting the community and have a genuine interest in the trade they are applying for.

We celebrate diversity and inclusivity, mirroring the varied communities we serve. We welcome applicants of all genders, cultural backgrounds, abilities, LGBTIQ+ identities, educational and professional backgrounds.

We’ve developed a comprehensive program that is up to four-years in length which offers a high level of support and skills development. So, you’re guaranteed to be working with some of the most experienced people in the business.

You’ll get your career off to a great start, with:

  • A structured training and development program that combines on-the-job learning with formal education
  • A dedicated mentor to guide and support you throughout your career journey
  • Opportunities to work on real projects in a safe, team-focused environment
  • Exposure to industry-leading technologies and practices
  • Ongoing feedback and development to help you grow personally and professionally

Firstly, please decide which depot location you would like to apply for, and which apprenticeship role is of most interest to you. You can view our open opportunities on our Careers page.

Our recruitment process includes the following steps:

Online application: Click through to apply. You will need to answer a few screening questions and attach a resume, your academic record and a cover letter. Use your cover letter to tell us about yourself and your motivation for applying.

Online assessment: Next stage will involve some online aptitude assessments (usually covering categories such as mechanical and/or numerical reasoning) which can be done on computer or phone and generally take approximately 60 minutes to complete.

Video interview: The candidates will be required to record themselves answering 3 interview-style questions through an online video interview portal (this can be done with any device with a camera, including phones, laptops and tablets). This step allows us to gauge the candidate’s communication and ability to answer and interview-style question.

Face-to-face interview: If all goes well, you’ll be invited to meet us in person. Interviews provide us with an opportunity to get to know more about you and what interests you about this line of work.

The interview also gives you a chance to showcase your full self and ask questions that will help you determine if our program is a good fit for you.

Come prepared to answer a variety of questions, and please feel free to ask us any questions you may have about us, about what we do, or about our apprenticeship program.

A practical + ‘working at heights’ assessment: Following the interview, candidates will be required to complete a few practical tasks (such as simple equipment assembly and tool handling) under supervision of a trade qualified employee.

Candidates will be required to climb a pole via a ladder and perform some of those tasks. As most of our trades are required to be able to perform work at heights, aim of this exercise is to ensure they are able to do that.

Retesting and pre-employment checks: Candidates that progress past the interview will need re-sit their aptitude tests to ensure validity of results, followed by pre-employment checks that include a reference check, national police check and medical assessment.

Apprenticeship opportunities

Our programs give you the chance to gain a nationally recognised electrical qualification and the opportunity to enjoy a successful career in our business.

A day in the life of a Lineworker involves installation, repair and maintenance of overhead and some underground electrical cable lines and infrastructure. Working in teams, we use elevated work platforms and equipment to raise, replace and maintain poles, hardware and overhead powerlines. We may also install, repair and maintain street lighting systems.  Importantly during weather events, our Lineworkers are the ones who respond to power outages due to powerlines affected by storm damage and ensure our community power outages are minimised.

With the construction of new estates and developments installing power underground, a day in the life of a Cable Jointer involves working in teams, mostly at ground/below ground level where they install and maintain cables and conduits in underground pits and trenches and terminate cables on electrical equipment. We use specialised training, fault finding and work methods to diagnose faults on the underground network.

A day in the life of a Substation Electrician involves constructing and maintaining electrical zone and ground mounted substations in teams, including finding and fixing faults with electrical plants and equipment such as transformers, circuit breakers, and HV switch gear and LV switchboards.

A day in the life of a Meter Technician involves travelling in a car to individual properties where they install and maintain smart meters.  This can involve testing the accuracy of meters, rectification of metering faults and replacement of metering equipment. This position will allow you to enjoy working autonomously (after you have completed your apprenticeship) and regular customer interaction in your day-to-day work.
